Deck Dog Milling Video

Milling multiple deck dogs on our CNC mill

Here’s a great video of Royal and Ryan making 5 deck dogs at once on our fancy Tormach CNC mill. Royal says it takes about an an hour and 40 minutes to make the 5 bodies. We used to do it by hand on the mill and it took about 2 hours to do each, so a pretty substantial time savings.

A Hoist… AND a Deck Winch!

Our Spotline hoist with optional deck track tensioner

Our good friend Vic Meyric at Asolo Repertory Theatre really wanted one of our new Spotline hoists for his vertical lifting needs, but what he actually needed was one more deck winch for the show he’s putting in this month. So Vic asked if he could use the Spotline as a deck winch and we told him that the only thing that made it unsuitable as a deck winch was the lack of a tensioner mechanism. After some back-and-forth about what should go into a tensioner mechanism, we came up with this add-on tensioner frame. You simply mount the frame to the floor and clamp your spotline right on top of the frame. Voila, a deck winch!

We only see two drawbacks in this setup: The hoist has less travel on the drum (75′) than the Pushstick (135′), and it’s more expensive. But with this setup you can have a two machines for a lot less than the cost of a Spotline and Pushstick combined.

This setup also shows our new ‘Smart Machine’ technique, where you can mount the Stagehand Pro directly to the hoist, which we’re pretty happy with. All put together, it’s a sweet little setup. Let us know what you think in the comments!
